My Roots I am an artist and musician living near Hadrian's Wall in the North East of England. Descended from border reivers my family have lurked around these parts forever. From bootmakers in Newcastle, Innkeepers in Byker, to coal miners in Bedlington! Professional training I studied art at Sunderland Polytechnic (now the University of Sunderland) and music at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne including music composition at postgraduate level. I express my understanding and passion for the North East through both these mediums. Music I first picked up an electric guitar at the age of 14 inspired by hard rock and heavy blues and began writing music at the same time, rather lamentable stuff I have to admit but a great grounding for learning to play. My serious compositions came later at undergraduate and then postgraduate level. I am currently working on a series of pieces influenced by my experience of the North East. I hope as a composer to be able to represent the area from a unique perspective.
| Art In my art I paint primarily in oils and acrylics as I love the heavier textures and vivid colours that these mediums can accommodate. My subject matter ranges from the popular traditional images of the north east to the everyday and often unobserved. Many of my ideas are drawn from childhood memories and others are from memories in the making as I now have a family of my own to raise in the county I love!
